 LIVING (A Charmed Life) - An installation by Andrea Bianconi
Opening: Saturday, May 7th, 2011 – 10 am – 4 pm - Italian Embassy in Washington, D.C.

European Union Embassies’ Open House Day



The Italian Embassy in Washington, DC, is pleased to present in its own Hall Piazza Italia, during the European Union Embassies’ Open House Day, a site specific installation by the artist Andrea Bianconi, entitled “ Living (A Charmed Life)”, which narrates the history of Italy for the 150th anniversary of Italian Unification.
The time views as a collection of messages, which made up history.

Bianconi resolved the issue with a basic, highly scenographic structure of great impact that is the intercessor of small messages entrusted to objects that cross history, our history of Italy.
The installation looks like a huge circle chandelier, from which, like a waterfall, 150 knotted strings, ropes, and countless objects are materialized.

The objects are chosen by the artist for their unification direction; at the first view, they may represent nothing, from unworked but highly evocative material which, when combined with material of narrative value, create that spark of understanding the viewer particularly appreciates.

In fact, Bianconi’s works must not only be viewed but also lived as an experience of the present and the past.
The monographic and multilingual book entitled “Andrea Bianconi” edited by Charta with texts by Renato Miracco, David Galloway, Oliver Orest Tschirky, Luigi Meneghelli, will be available to the visitors.

The exhibition is generously supported by SEA, Società Elettromeccanica Arzignanese, one of the leading companies in the electromechanical sector.
SEA is celebrating more than 50 years of quality, innovation, technology, tradition and success.
Energy is life, and life is endlessly taking on different forms that can emerge, meet with others and spread out.

Andrea Bianconi was born in Arzignano, Italy, in 1974. Since he moved to Milan in 2004 and New York in 2008, he has held many solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group shows around the world (like in Maraya Art Center, Sharjah, United Arab Emirates; Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen, Denmark; Palazzo Reale, Milan, Italy; Tina B, The Prague Contemporary Art Festival, Prague, Czech Republic; Furini Arte Contemporanea, Rome; Barbara Davis Gallery, Houston, USA; Vernon Gallerie, Prague; Galleria Comunale d’Arte Contemporanea, Monfalcone, Italy; Volta Show, New York; The Chinese Umbrella Hat Project, Shanghai, China).
His works are represented in many public and private collections around the world.

Open to the Public – The Embassy will conduct security checks, please avoid bringing large bags & backpacks. Please bring identification.

Free shuttle buses with two routes will drop visitors off at Embassy.
Buses will begin service from Dupont Circle Metro Station-P ST. NW & 20th St. NW, every 5 minutes, from 9:45 am to 4:20 pm.
