"Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam" Project

Project Name: GERD
Country: Ethiopia
Region: Benishangul - Gumaz along the Blue Nile
Type of Project: Hydropower plant

The transformer supplied by SEA will be used for the construction power plant of "Grand Renaissance Dam Etiopian" which, when it will be completed in 2017, will be for its record size one of the first dams in the world and especially the largest of African Continent .
We are talking about the water of the Blue Nile, one of the two branches of the great river that is always considered as symbol of life in Egypt.
The project is located approximately 700 km north west of the capital Addis Abeba, in the region of Benishangul - Gumaz along the Blue Nile.
The dam will be 1800m long, 170m high and the total volume of 10 million m³: the project involves the construction of a dam with two main power plants installed at the foot of it.
These power plants consist of 16 Francis turbines with a total installed capacity of 6000 MW and an expected production of 15,000 GWh / year.
A concrete spillway with capacity of 15,000 m3/s and a rockfill saddle dam (5 km long and 50 m) high complete the project.

The transformer supplied for the MV Network of Main Power House of the rockfill saddle dam has the following features:

SEA transformer type: three phase liquid immersed transformer with ONAN cooling
Power rating: 8 MVA
Voltage ratio: 20.5 / 20 ± 8 x 1.25% kV
Type of tap changer: OLTC
Connecting group: Dyn11
Frequency: 50 Hz
Ambient temperature: 50°C
Altitude of installation: 1100 m.a.s.l.
No.of pcs: 1 unit

GERD will be important for the second most populous nation in Africa, where 77% of the population still does not have access to electricity and other basic services, to get green energy from renewables.
In short, another monumental work in which Italian companies are collaborating for the economic growth of one country with significant economic prospects for the future.
